Strike actions in educational systems in Nigeria; Causes, effects and solutions

About three months ago, students in Nigerian tertiary institutions returned back to school after staying at home for over 4 months of strike action. This strike action is almost the 2nd or 3rd within two years.

The incidence of strike actions in Nigerian institution is nothing new again.  Its now like negotiations between the university staff union and the government is no longer effective in resolving difference. When a closer look is given to the cause of the strike actions, one would see that the university staffs are canvassing for the good of the educational system in Nigeria.

Really more money needs to be pumped into Nigerian educational system if the products of such institutions are to compete favorably with their foreign counterparts. But should keeping students indefinitely idle at home the best solution to such advocacies?

Why is dialogue no longer effective in resolving common conflicts between the academic union staffs and the government? What ways has strike actions helped in raising standards of education in Nigeria? Is the actions of ASUU justifiable?

We highly regards the contributions of Nigerian scholars to this topic. Your comments and suggestions can really make a lasting impact to the recurring incidence of strike actions in our tertiary institutions today.
